The conviction that Scientology took advantage of vulnerable people was upheld by the appeals court in France last week.

This is excellent news. The argument from the organisation that their religious freedom has been violated is ridiculous as it certainly does not stop individuals from choosing what they want to believe in. It simply highlights the dangerous and cult like recruitment and financial manipulation this organisation likes to engage in.
Panorama, a public affairs documentary programme on the BBC, has done a few interesting programmes about scientology. I am not sure if the video will work outside of the UK, but it is worth trying to find it if it doesn't.
Scientology appears to be particularly overt in their dealings and as it has been relatively recently founded seems more like a cult than any other religion. However, I see little difference between religions in their manipulation of individual vulnerabilities, whether it is emotional or financial, leading to fanatical followers who are willing to harm others in their religious quest. All religions are essentially cults, they are dangerous and harmful. Singling out scientology is a start and hopefully there will be more to come.
